Mining Operations Strategy Deployment

Visual management enables sitewide performance transformation

Our client is a multinational commodity trading and mining company with worldwide production facilities that supply metals, minerals, crude oil, oil products, coal, natural gas, and agricultural products to the automotive, power generation, steel production, and food processing industries.

The Australian mining business comprises 20+ operational sites that produce coal, copper, zinc, lead, nickel, and cobalt. The site leadership team for a zinc mining operation in Queensland recognised that key deliverables in their operational strategy had slipped and were unlikely to be delivered on time. On investigation, it was recognised that the operational objectives were unclear, leading to missed daily, weekly, and monthly production targets with insufficient action to improve.

The approach

ORBIZ was engaged in facilitating a strategy deployment program to realign the site’s operational objectives and cascade the strategy sitewide by developing a system of visual management forums.

The visual management forums would enable the strategy to be easily understood and managed at each level and across each department by presenting the objectives as operational targets and KPIs.

Visual management would also be used to provide governance to site projects and improvement initiatives to ensure on-time completion could be achieved while realising the expected benefits.

The solutions

A sitewide implementation program was developed, including meeting cadence, agendas, and a supporting governance process.

The ORBIZ team then facilitated the implementation of eight Visual Performance Centres (VPC), which included an embedded daily problem-solving process to drive continuous improvement.

A custom training program was delivered alongside the implementation to provide the leadership teams responsible for maintaining and sustaining the new processes with the required skills

As the VPCs were established and the training program completed, ORBIZ provided hands-on coaching and mentoring, enabling the process owners to effectively utilise the new system and sustain the new working methods.
